A scientist's commentary on events and culture

barry headshot I’m a computer scientist now, and for many years earlier, a journalist. I’m curious about a lot of things. I also speak both languages, geek English and ordinary English. My area in computers is a part of artificial intelligence called Natural Language Processing — which in some way ties the two halves of my life together. The turning point happened in stages in the 1990s. For a time, I did both, working at the New York Times and studying for a master’s degree at Columbia University. I had the opportunity to go for a doctorate, but it was a full-time commitment. And I’ve never looked back.
