A scientist's commentary on events and culture

He Has Ascended

Yes, that must be it. Harold Camping, the radio preacher who predicted Armageddon last night must have been scooped up and taken to heaven.

Why not? When I was a kid, I was sent to Hebrew school after regular school, just like the Catholic kids were sent to Catechism, to receive some religious instruction. They told us about prophets all over the place. The prophets were always lonely voices; the world was always ending; they alone were loved by the gods. Harold Camping

Camping has disappeared. He was nowhere to be found any time yesterday, the day of the rapture, a number of news organizations reported. Atheists were delighted, followers were befuddled, and the world goes on. But it’s going on without the Family Radio Network, Camping’s outfit. The web server appears to be down, and with it Internet radio links. Reporters are making phone calls and writing emails, but no one is home.

Maybe there’s another explanation. Maybe he has absconded, and become just another rich, old, white guy living anonymously in Central America, in one of those colonies for rich, old, white people. I can see it. From what I remember from my own religious instruction, all this Bible study was very boring and not very likely. I stopped all that nonsense as soon as I was old enough to assert my will. Camping, if you remember, was 89 years old. He was retired when he got into radio preaching. It was something he could do without much effort, and he did it for years, quite successfully. I read he had a bankroll of some $104 million. But really, how long can you go on delivering the same old message. He got bored. He wanted out. He had plenty of cash.

I’ve also read some statements by other spiritual leaders who are calling Camping a false prophet. The churches and other houses of worship of all kinds must be echoing this same message to their faithful. They are saying, “Hey, don’t follow that guy; follow me!” You can see it’s just a variation on a theme.

An update on Tuesday night.

The worst of all worlds. He’s back. A short postponement; a slight delay. This happens in every business. Five more months of radio shows; five more months of donations; five more months of ecstasy for the faithful. Maybe property values in Belize are rising.

His explanation was none other the universal spiritual explanation: The ways of the lord are mysterious. Indeed.

  2. I do find one thing puzzling, Rumor is he was picked up in a White SUV, I think god may have decided to modernize and Harold was chosen to become the forth horseman.
